Frequently asked questions

The Bluetooth autostart does not work, why?

This happens very often with Huawei devices. But also with some other devices. Cause are settings to save energy. A remedy is described here:

Protected Apps

GPS turns off after a while, why?

The reason for this can also be the settings for saving energy:

Protected Apps

Why does the app always display a notification even when not in use?

The service for checking for a Bluetooth connection is permanently active. This consumes no system resources. The notification can be disabled in the Android notification settings. However, the detection of the BT connection remains active.

Features of the Android app

  • Display of the permissible maximum speed of the road currently being traveled
  • works without data connection while driving
  • Possibility of a data update directly in the app
  • Display of the current speed
  • Display digital or analog / digital
  • Comparison of the driven and the permissible speed
  • Evaluation of the result by color system (green / yellow / red)
  • Support of the OpenStreetMap parameters maxspeed, maxspeed: forward and maxspeed: backward
  • Automatic start / end with Bluetooth connection
  • additional start of another app possible
  • different display variants
  • Overlay display or full screen
  • usable worldwide

Warning functions

  • optional acoustic warning
  • Warning when exceeding the tolerance limit
  • Warning when falling below the tolerance limit
  • Tolerance limit freely selectable
  • Announcement of the permissible maximum speed
  • Distances of the warning tones can be selected "too quickly"

  • Distance 0 only gives one warning tone

Additional functions

  • GPX files of the last 20 rides available
  • GPX export manually or by email (own GMail account)
  • Map with all stationary danger zones in the OSM
  • find a parked vehicle
  • Location transfer with prepared SMS

Quick start Guide

  • Switching mode private / OSM database - double-click on the sign

  • the private database mode is deactivated after the first installation and has to be activated in the setup if necessary (uncheck box under option "OSM only")

  • Speed selection menu - briefly touch the plate (with automatic change to private database)

  • with the option "Only OSM" the speed is deleted when tapping on the sign, active warning tones are switched off

  • Moving the Overlay Displays - Touching the Speedometer
  • Displaying the setup menu - button in the splash screen, long press on the sign / speed or via the entry in the status bar
  • the buttons in the splash screen become active by clicking on them

  • The home screen will then not stop automatically, either choose an option or start the app with the back button

  • Round or Square Corners - Close Keep the overlay of the overlay display (only for the sliding displays) pressed longer
  • Quit the app - short tap of the little cross

Only in private database:

  • Top speed +10 kmh / 5 mph - Click on the speedometer
  • Top speed -10 kmh / 5 mph- Double-click on the speedometer

Databases for maximum speeds

  • OSM database, data download directly in the app
  • Germany, Austria, Switzerland (DACH) weekly new
  • Updates only possible with free access to OSM
  • Otherwise, the status of the database remains unchanged
  • Update of other countries with additional tool
  • Download additional tool on this homepage (with instructions)
  • Data transmission with integrated FTP module
  • Private database for own storage of limits
  • Storage directly while driving
  • These points can also be deleted or changed

Special features compared to similar app's

  • The app works without data connection while driving
  • It works immediately after starting as soon as the GPS signal is present
  • You can start immediately, after crossing the first point with a speed information is displayed
  • In addition to this app, you can also start any other app (for example, a navigation app such as MapFactor Navigator, in full-screen mode, however, eliminates this possibility)
  • In addition to the maxspeed tag, the app also evaluates the tags maxspeed: forward and maxspeed: backward (typical application, for example, the area of railway barriers, where different speeds usually apply in the different directions of travel)
  • Most other apps do not show the maximum speed on appropriately named roads
  • Highways without speed limits will be displayed with the sign "all prohibitions lifted"
  • Areas with variable speed information are signaled by a flashing speed sign (the current speeds can not be displayed due to the system)
  • For the last two display variants, the app only acts as a precise GPS speedometer
  • the change of the permissible maximum speed is announced in German / English language (can be switched off)
  • in addition to exceeding the permissible maximum speed, the subsequent undershooting of this limit is signaled acoustically
  • the tolerance for exceeding the permissible speed is freely adjustable
  • there are various display modes to choose from (see screenshots)

  • the movable overlays are infinitely scalable in size (adjustable in the setup)
  • Transparency is infinitely variable in the movable displays (adjustable in the setup)

Other notes

  • the app can only display the maximum speeds stored in the OSM, since the data for some streets have not yet been entered or entered incorrectly, these errors are logically displayed as well
  • in case of false reports, you can set the maximum speed to unknown (display of a question mark) by briefly tapping on the speed sign
  • after that only the driven speed is displayed in green, the warning tone stops
  • If data for top speeds are found again, the app works automatically again as intended
  • Of course, it would be desirable if users of this app would participate in updating the OSM data
  • From my own experience, I can say that it is very easy and fun (you can find information on the following pages of this homepage)
  • especially if you drive past its "own" signs after an update of the database, which of course is announced / displayed correctly
  • The app has an intelligent detection of whether to use a descent (from highways or highways)
  • a recognized departure is indicated by a flashing arrow
  • If, within 13 seconds, the speed is reduced or increased by 15 km / h, or has approached the valid maximum speed of the descent up to 10 km / h, then this is also displayed
  • This results in the top speed of the descent being displayed even when one is moving past the exit on the highway / highway at walking pace (e.g., in a traffic jam)
  • but that is irrelevant, because you can not exceed the maximum speed in this case anyway
  • In practice, the display quickly returns to the maximum speed of the main carriageway

Restrictions after 14 days of testing

  • Tolerance until warning is fixed at 5 km/h
  • Scaling of the overlays fixed at 100%
  • Announcement of the maximum speed is omitted
  • Update of OSM data only with additional tool
  • the additional tool is available free of charge
  • Manual mode with private database is not available
  • removed some display variants
  • Additional functions (see above) deactivated

These restrictions do not apply to the Pro version. This can be purchased in the setup menu for 1,99 EUR.

Information about programming the app

  • I have created the app with the excellent programming language B4A (Basic4Android) of the company Anywhere Software
  • It can run on Android version 4.1 or higher
  • I used a library by Frédéric Leneuf-Magaud to realize the movable overlays
  • The programming language PureBasic was used for the OSM data converter
  • Without the App Lockito I could have programmed my app, but a test only in traffic would have been unthinkable
  • With it you can simulate the departure of routes wonderful, without having to take a step in front of the house
